Ear wax is completely natural. It protects your ear canal from dust, bacteria and water. However, for some people, wax can build up and cause problems including reduced hearing, earache, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and a feeling of fullness or blockage.
If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, microsuction ear wax removal is the safest and most effective method of clearing the blockage. Unlike traditional ear syringing (which uses water), microsuction uses a gentle suction device to remove wax under direct vision using a microscope or loupe.
Before your appointment, we recommend using olive oil ear drops twice daily for three to five days. This softens the wax and makes the procedure quicker and more comfortable. You can buy olive oil ear drops over the counter at any of our branches.
When you arrive for your appointment, your pharmacist will first ask about your symptoms and ear health history. They'll then examine your ears using an otoscope, a handheld device with a light and magnifying lens, to assess the amount and type of wax present.
The microsuction procedure itself typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes for both ears. You'll be seated comfortably and the pharmacist will use a small suction tip to gently remove the wax. You may hear a crackling or humming sound, but the procedure is not painful.
After the procedure, your pharmacist will check your ears again to ensure all the wax has been removed and that your ear canal and eardrum look healthy. They'll also provide aftercare advice, including how to minimise future wax build-up.
Most people notice an immediate improvement in their hearing after the procedure. If you're prone to wax build-up, we recommend a check-up every six to twelve months. No GP referral is needed. Simply book an appointment at one of our branches.
