    Boosting Your Immunity This Winter

    10 January 20264 min read

As the days get shorter and temperatures drop, colds, flu and other winter bugs become more common. While you can't completely prevent catching infections, there are evidence-based steps you can take to support your immune system and reduce your risk.

The single most effective thing you can do is get your annual flu vaccination. Flu is not just a bad cold. It can be a serious illness, particularly for older adults, young children, pregnant women, and people with long-term health conditions. We offer flu vaccinations at all our branches, often with no appointment needed.

Vitamin D is sometimes called the "sunshine vitamin" because our bodies produce it when exposed to sunlight. During the UK winter, most people don't get enough sun exposure to maintain adequate levels. Public Health Wales recommends that everyone considers taking a 10 microgram vitamin D supplement during autumn and winter.

Good hand hygiene remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of infections. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, particularly before eating, after using the toilet, and after being in public spaces.

Sleep is critically important for immune function. Adults should aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep per night. Poor sleep has been shown to reduce the effectiveness of vaccines and increase susceptibility to infections.

Regular moderate exercise can boost your immune system. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity per week. Brisk walking, cycling, or swimming are all excellent choices. However, avoid overtraining, as intense prolonged exercise can temporarily suppress immune function.

If you're feeling unwell this winter, remember that your pharmacist is your first port of call for minor illnesses. We can recommend effective over-the-counter treatments and advise when you might need to see a GP. Don't wait in a GP queue when your pharmacist can help today.
